Decolite Lightweight Light Shaft Drums – Design Possibilities

We were originally approached years back to sit with the architect to assist with the design possibilities of using Decolite at the redevelopment of this site on Portswood road.

After much discussion, the architect decided on Decolite as the preferred material to use for the manufacturing of the lightweight light shaft drums. This was no easy feat. Each light shaft or drum (6 in total) had a height of 3100mm and a diameter of 3760mm, creating incredibly large cylinders.

Decolite allows for Easy Assembly

The lightweight Decolite light shafts were manufactured in Johannesburg and then transported to the site in Cape town. The drums were made up in 8 sections, with each section weighing 55kg, with each Decolite drum having a total mass of 440kg.

Each Decolite drum was assembled on the ground floor of the building, below the openings in the roof slab. The Decolite light shaft drums were then hoisted up by means of a rigging at roof level, in to the prefabricated cut outs in the slab. The rigging had to lift the drums 30meters above the ground.

The Decolite light shaft drums slotted in to the openings in the slab and then secured.

Fire Rated

Due to the position of the Decolite lightweight drums, they had to be fire rated. In order to achieve this, we removed the majority of the internal EPS after coating the required profile. Thus, making the elements certified for this type of application.
